Who is Mr. Schilaty
Mr. Schilaty was born in Everett in 1976. He attended View Ridge Elementary from 1st to 5th grade. In 2nd grade Mr. Schilaty was diagnosed with a learning disability. He attended special education classes from 2nd to 4th grade for reading and spelling. With a lot of hard work and support from his parents Mr. Schilaty was able to learn to read. He still struggles with spelling but luckily spell check has been created and that has been a great help.
From 6th to 8th grade Mr. Schilaty went to Evergreen Middle School. With a lot of hard work and effort Mr. Schilaty was able to earn mostly B's and A's and enjoyed playing for the school basketball team.
In High School Mr. Schilaty attended Everett High School, the "School of Champions." He was one of 262 1995 graduates of Everett High School. He graduated with a 3.4 GPA which represents a lot of hard work and dedication. Mr. Schilaty also experienced a lot of success on the boys basketball and track teams. He was able to play in the state boys basketball tournament two times and Everett placed 5th in state his senior year. Mr. Schilaty was the team captain.
After graduating from High School Mr. Schilaty attended Skagit Valley College in Mt. Vernon, WA in the fall and spring quarters and Everett Community College during the summer quarters. Mr. Schilaty enjoyed playing on the men's basketball team. Skagit went to the NWAACC tournament both years he played and placed 3rd in his sophomore year. Mr. Schilaty was the team co-captain. He wanted to be a computer guy but after taking several computer classes at both Skagit and Everett CC he realized that his brain and computers were not compatible. He then considered a career as a fireman but felt that staying in school was what he needed to do. He then remembered back to his high school counselors and liked the types of things that they did and he decided to become a school counselor.In April of 1999 Mr. Schilaty moved to Salt Lake City, UT where he worked as a delivery driver for Diamond Party Rentals setting up for parties and delivering things like tables, chairs, linens, etc. He also worked at Maggie Moo's Ice Cream and Treatery and as a lift operator at Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort. After living and working in Salt Lake City for a year (and saving all the money he could) Mr. Schilaty was able to attend the University of Utah as an in-state resident which saved him a lot of money.At the University of Utah Mr. Schilaty majored in Interpersonal Communication and earned his bachelor's degree in May of 2002. Six month prior to graduating, in December of 2001, Mr. Schilaty was married to his wife Laura in Bountiful, UT.
In June of 2002 Mr. Schilaty started his masters program and in May of 2004 graduated from the University of Utah with a second degree, a Masters in Educational Psychology. While finishing his second year of his masters program Mr. Schilaty was working as the 7th grade counselor at Kearns Junior High School.
In August of 2004 Mr. Schilaty interviewed for the open Counselor position at Gateway Middle School and was hired. Mr. Schilaty and Laura, who is from Iowa City, IA, moved from Salt Lake City, where they had both lived for 5 years, to south Everett.
On January 20th 2005 Mr. Schilaty's first child, Bowen, was born and in March of 2005 Mr. Schilaty and his family bought a house and moved in on April 1st. Mr. Schilaty's second child, Boyd, was born in June of 2006.For the 2009-2010 school year Mr. Schilaty was transferred to his alma mater Everett High School to work as a counselor there. Mr. Schilaty enjoyed being back at his old school and getting reacquainted with old friends and teachers. Additionally Mr. Schilaty learned about how high schools work and how to be a counselor at the high school level, which is very different from middle school. The Schilaty's had their third child Ryan in March of 2010.
Mr. Schilaty was able to move back to Gateway for the 2012-2013 school year and currently is at Gateway and coaches Cross Country, Boys Basketball and Track.
