Superintendent's Message, August 5, 2015

  • Dr. Cohn
Dear Everett Public Schools families and staff,

Today’s message comes jointly from me and Everett Education Association President Jared Kink. We bring you information about the status of this coming school year and contract negotiations between the district and the education association.

The school year calendar, including our start date, is one of the many items decided in the teachers’ contract negotiations. The calendar has been included in the contract as far back as anyone involved with negotiations can remember.

The current contract with the teachers’ association expires on Aug. 31, 2015. In negotiations years, it's not unusual for talks to continue into late August.

We "traditionally" start school on the Wednesday after Labor Day, which would be Sept. 9 this year.

The district and the education association will use all of our respective communications channels to announce the start date to families and staff when we have reached agreement. You can subscribe to the district’s InTouch email list online.

If you have a student enrolled in school, please make sure your child’s school has up-to-date contact information so we can reach you quickly with accurate information. Schools open for your back-to-school business on Friday, Aug. 14.

Please be assured, we are working together toward an earlier-rather-than-later contract agreement. We are looking forward to a school year full of learning excitement, and to greeting students and families in our schools when school starts this fall.

Gary Cohn, Superintendent Everett Public Schools
Jared Kink, President Everett Education Association
