Rachel's Challenge is a program which teaches every student in our school the tools and benefits of kindness and compassion. At Cedar Wood the program is supported by our PTA and coordinated by our Counselor, Mr. Coleman.
- During the first month of school Mr. Coleman visits each classroom to explain the program and to introduce students to the five Character Development themes.
- Each week Mr. Coleman presents a guidance/character development lesson in the intermediate classrooms. These lessons focus on the themes of Rachel's Challenge as well as other character development and friendship themes.
- Students learn how to fill out "links" which are combined to create a chain of kindness in each classroom. These links record examples of peers demonstrating kindness and compassion, and become a focus for class meetings.
- Throughout the year representatives from each classroom meet during their lunch/recess in Kindness Clubs to plan and carry out activities which promote kindness and compassion throughout the school. These clubs are led by parent volunteers; student membership rotates each month.
