Body Mass Index

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a mathematical formula that describes relative weight for height used to estimate body fat content and to predict the risk of certain health conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers. While the BMI is useful as a general guideline, it does not distinguish excess fat from muscle. You should consult with your healthcare provider in order to determine your ideal weight.

In children and teens, body mass index is used to assess underweight, overweight and risk for overweight. Children's body fatness changes over the years as they grow. Also, girls and boys differ in their body fatness as they mature, which is why BMI for children, also referred to as BMI-for-age, is gender and age specific. Visit BMI for Children and Teens for more information.

Instructions: Find your height in the column on the left. Move across the table until you find your weight. The corresponding number at the bottom of the column is your BMI. This information is not intended to replace advice given by your healthcare provider. If you have questions, please contact your healthcare provider. Chart values are based on adult height and weight measurements.
