Learning Enrichment
Learning enrichment offers differentiation in math, reading or both in the students' current classroom beginning in the second semester of the year in which they are initially identified. This designation remains with students throughout their elementary school years.
The focus of this program is to provide students with opportunities to work with peers of similar ability, experience project-based learning and enrichment activities that extend and deepen the learning experience.
Students are identified for learning enrichment through the screening process and other assessments.
Kindergarten: To refer a kindergarten student for screening, parents/guardians/teachers/community members complete a referral form by the posted deadline. Screening takes place in November/December at the student's home school. Screening results will be sent to families in January with information about learning enrichment identification.
Kindergarten CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) Screener:
- The kindergarten screener takes approximately 45 minutes (including practice) but is not timed and requires no reading. Kindergarten students will look at pictures then click the circle under the picture that best matches the number, figure, or verbal relationship shown in the question.
- Students listen to instructions on a Chromebook with headphones throughout the test. Oral instructions are only available in English at this time. The screener consists of three subtests including, Verbal/Picture Analogies, Number Analogies, and Figure Matrices. Each subtest includes practice questions to help students become familiar with the content and format of the subtests.
Kindergarten Learning Enrichment Referral Forms: The referral deadline was November 10, 2025. We are no longer accepting referral forms for the 2025-2026 school year.
First and Fifth Grade Universal CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) Screening:
First and fifth grade: Students do not need to be referred. They are part of the universal screening process which takes place in the fall. The screener results will be sent to families with test scores, recommendations for further testing or considerations for course selection in middle school.
- In first grade, the screener is used to identify students who might qualify for learning enrichment and/or for recommendation to take the full battery of tests for highly capable identification and placement. The first-grade screener takes approximately 45 minutes (including practice) but is not timed and requires no reading. First grade students will look at a few pictures then click the circle under the picture that best matches the number, figure, or verbal relationship shown in the question. Oral instructions are provided only in English at this time.*
- In fifth grade, the screener is used to identify students for Learning Enrichment and support students' course selection in middle school where they have access to advanced and accelerated options. The fifth-grade screener is of similar design and duration to the first-grade screener but is timed. Fifth grade students will also select the best item to complete analogies, but between words, numbers, or figures. Oral instructions are provided only in English at this time.*
- *If your student’s first language is not English and they are being served with ML supports, as identified by the WIDA, alternate testing options will be implemented.
Exit Procedure:
Everett Public Schools has a procedure to allow families to opt-out of learning enrichment services when initially offered on the placement form. Additionally, families can choose to decline these services by following the procedure below:
- Parent/guardian submits an Exit Form requesting that the student no longer receive learning enrichment services. In this case, the parent/guardian submits an LE Opt-Out Form to P-5 Instruction/Highly Capable Program, 3900 Broadway, Everett, WA 98201, or email to highlycapable@everettsd.org. A copy of all communication will be placed in the student’s file.
