Dual Language integrates native English and Spanish speakers, promoting academic achievement, language development, and cross-cultural understanding. Subjects are taught in both languages, helping students maintain their first language while acquiring a second language.

Language Allocation Update!

Beginning in 2026–27, the program will implement updated language allocations in grades 1–4, maintaining strong Spanish development alongside earlier and more consistent English instruction.
Aligned with proven Dual Language models: These adjustments continue to align with the standard 90/10 Dual Language model, providing students with earlier and more consistent English literacy instruction while continuing to strongly develop Spanish language skills. This approach supports multilingual learners and strengthens the path toward full bilingualism and biliteracy.
Informed by years of collaboration and feedback: This change reflects several years of program review and input from grade-level teams, school leaders, Dual Language stakeholders, and staff, who identified a need for earlier and more consistent English instruction to better support literacy development.

K: 90/10 → 90/10

1st: 90/10 → 80/20

2nd: 80/20 → 70/30

3rd: 70/30 → 60/40

4th: 60/40 → 50/50

5th: 50/50 → 50/50

We encourage families of prospective applicants to attend an informational meeting to gain a clear understanding of the expectations and responsibilities before applying.
Applications are available electronically on the Dual Language website in Spanish and English.
Complete a new student enrollment form.
Submitting an application does not guarantee a space in the Dual Language Program
Students on the waiting list will be placed into the Dual Language program as openings become available
Priority will be given to Emerson or Silver Lake families.
If your student is accepted into the Dual Language program but lives outside the boundary zone of Emerson or Silver Lake, transportation can be provided by the district. If you have questions, please contact the Transportation department at 425-385-4144.

Parents are an integral part of the Dual Language program. The success of the students depends largely on the commitment and support of the parents involved. Initially, you will need to consider the following:

At least a six-year commitment (K-5)
Regular school attendance by your child
Strong commitment to your child by being supportive and involved in your child's education
