Child-led play allows the child’s interest to lead the direction of play.  
This forms the foundation of “Serve and Return.”  This is the best way to support a child’s brain growth.  

The first step is to notice what your child is interested in.  By noticing, and then  following their lead, we can engage in  meaningful back and forth interactions that support brain development.  Information on “serve and return” can be found here: Play and Learn supports growth in literacy, mathematics, cognitive, language, social-emotional and motor development.  

Children also benefit from socialization with  other adults and friends.  While playing, children need active adult engagement, both to model respectful play behavior and help with conflicts.

Circle time is a fun time of songs, a story and more!  Children learn to use their imagination, enjoy music and build listening skills!   During circle time please:

 • Sit with your child and model
   participation by listening,  singing,
   dancing, etc.  

• Save adult conversations for  after
  circle time.

• Allow your child to take a break
  outside of circle time if they are
  having a difficult time.  This will
  allow others to continue to  
  participate.   Rejoin when you can
  or try again next session!

Dual-Language Circle Times One week per month circle times are dual-language (see calendar), in Spanish and English!  Early  exposure to a variety of languages increases a child’s brain neural  activity, cognitive ability and  executive functioning!

Supervision requires that parents and caregivers:

• Stay in the same room, or outdoor
  area, as your children. 

• Ensure that your children are
  playing safely with other children, 
  materials and toys. 

• Take your children with you if you
  leave for any reason, including to 
  use the restroom or take a phone 
  call. 

• Keep all children in your group
  together. While we welcome you to 
  bring multiple children ages birth 
  through five, adults must be able to 
  directly supervise all children in
  their care.

• Walk all children in to Play and
  Learn. Do not drop children off at 
  the door/sidewalk/curb
  while parking.

• Do not leave children unattended in
  vehicles for any reason, or any 
  length of time.

• Refrain from cell phone or
  electronic use that prevents
  adequate supervision.

Your child’s development and wellbeing are harmed by screen use.  Both theirs AND yours.  It is associated with delays in language, communication, problem solving and emotional intelligence.  Where your eyes and attention are communicate what’s important!  We ask that all adults refrain from cell phone use.

At Play and Learn we strive to be good community partners.  This includes being respectful of the spaces and materials that we share.  Everyone has a part to play!  

• Put away before you walk away!   
  When you leave an area, please put
  toys back where you found them—
  on a table, in a tub, etc!

• Sweep it up!  Keep play dough and
  sand in the tub or on the table and
  sweep up any spills!

• Art Station—Please check the floor
  for any spills and wipe up any
  mess.  Do not take extra materials
  home with you as we have limited
  quantities available.  Art materials
  are for children to use with adults
  during the session. 

• Each site has an area  outside of the
  play area where families can take a
  break and have a snack!  We ask
  that you do not eat or drink (other
  than water or parent/caregiver
  beverages) in the play area.
