Sustainability Advisory Council

The work of the sustainability advisory council is advisory in nature, and it will be asked to provide guidance and advice to district staff regarding implementation of the district's commitment to sustainability.

As legislation and codes become increasingly focused on reducing carbon footprints and the use of fossil fuels, energy and water and reusing or recycling materials, the district must decide how to comply with these requirements and what strategic direction to head in the future.

Membership

The Chief Operating Officer oversees this process and is responsible and accountable to the superintendent for the work of this council. This council is composed of parents and community members representing a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives, supported by representatives from various district departments.

Everett Public Schools Commitment to Sustainability

Everett Public Schools defines sustainability as thriving today while protecting resources for future generations. We teach students stewardship and responsible practices, expand renewable energy and recycling efforts, reduce emissions and resource use, and make purchasing and budgeting decisions with sustainability in mind. Collaboration with staff, families, and community partners drives ongoing learning, accountability, and measurable progress across the district.

Role and Purpose

Secondary Composting Video Contest

In fall 2024, elementary schools successfully implemented their composting programs. Secondary schools began their composting journey in January after returning from winter break.  To promote proactive, innovative, and creative student-centered communication about composting, the district hosted a video contest for any interested secondary school student or student team to create and submit a video about the why and how of composting at school to encourage all students to compost in the new year.
