Penny Creek second grader wins Spacesuit Design Contest at Museum of Flight

Penny Creek second grader wins Spacesuit Design Contest at Museum of FlightPenny Creek Elementary second grader Reyansh Asthana won the Spacesuit Design Contest for his age group at the Museum of Flight in Seattle.

The theme for 2025 was Sustainability Suits, inspired by the mantra “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” Participants used recycled materials, typically considered trash, to bring their ideas to life and build their spacesuits.

Asthana’s design stood out in the Comet category (ages 5-8), which he ultimately won. He modeled his spacesuit on a runway, impressing judges with both his design and presentation.

Through the contest, Asthana met distinguished astronauts including retired Air Force Colonel Eileen Collins, the first woman to command a NASA Space Shuttle, and retired U.S. Navy Captain Wendy Lawrence, the first woman graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy to fly into space.

Asthana’s winning design will be showcased at the museum's Fashion in Flight event on Nov. 8. The event highlights designers from around the Northwest.
