Elementary 18 has a new name!
Elementary 18, signifying the 18th elementary school in Everett Public School’s district, has a new name.
Since the June groundbreaking, there has been nonstop work in the area east of Sunset Road on 180th St. SE, the site of the new elementary school. It is starting to look more like a building now, and thanks to community and student involvement, it has a name.
An advisory committee for Elementary 18 naming was formed in the fall to manage the name selection process. Families of students attending Cedar Wood, Forest View and Woodside elementary schools received a postcard in October asking for online submissions of potential names for the new elementary, which was also open for public submissions. After an open suggestion period, the committee narrowed the list to eight names and had students at those three schools vote for their favorite name. Those eight names were:
- Emma Yule Elementary
- Meadow Ridge Elementary
- Paul Allen Elementary
- Pioneer Elementary
- Sunset Hill Elementary
- Tambark Creek Elementary
- Whispering Firs Elementary
- Willow Elementary
At the December 4 board meeting the committee provided the board of directors this list of names and rationale for each. The board considered the names, and had the opportunity to consider other names in their final selection.
“All of the names presented to the board had merit,” stated Carol Andrews, newly-appointed board president. “In the end, the board felt Tambark Creek Elementary was the best representation for our new school. The school overlooks Tambark Creek and Tambark Creek County Park. It keeps the focus on the surrounding geography and will help students remember conservation as they learn about the wetlands on the school site.”
Built with funds from the 2016 capital bond, the school is scheduled to open in time for the start of school in fall 2019.
Ms. Celia O’Connor-Weaver, currently the principal at Hawthorne Elementary School, will be the principal of the new elementary school. “We are excited to have chosen a name for our school,” O’Connor-Weaver said. “We loved the community participation and are excited to choose our school mascot and colors in the fall. I am sure our students will have great ideas.”
Families whose student will attend Tambark Creek Elementary will be notified in January. The hiring of approximately 60 staff to support student learning will begin in early 2019.
