Appearance

  • Leaves: three or five oval leaflets. Pointed tips, and they are toothed around edges.
  • Flowers: magenta, small, and their petals are hot pink.
  • Fruit: raspberry-like clusters of orange, yellow, or purplish red.
  • They can be up to 3-10 feet tall.

  • Salmonberries grow in moist woods on the under story part.
  • Also wet slopes.
  • Wooded stream banks

  • The salmonberry is a perennial plant.
  • The salmon berry changes by blooming from April to June
  • Their fruits ripen in late July.
  • The salmon berry dies down in the winter, and it looks like a bunch of sticks

  • The fruits can be eaten by animals.
  • Salmon berry leaves are browsed by deer and rabbits.
  • The Makah dried and peeled branches for pipe stems.
  • Quileute chewed the leaves and spit them on burns, and in the winter they used the bark instead.
