    Hello Students and Families!

My name is Cristina Ripley, Art Specialist at Mill Creek Elementary School. K-5 students will receive art education all year! The district curriculum is called "The Art of Education".

The Art of Education curriculum is aligned with Washington State and National Standards for Art Education. The program includes social emotional learning (SEL) and diverse and global art examples.

In October, 4th and 5th grades created Amate bark designs, inspired by Mexican folk art. We learned about the principles of design; unity, emphasis and pattern. We also learned to apply various color schemes, including analogous, complimentary, warm and cool colors.

2nd and 3rd grades also enjoyed creating alebrijes inspired by Mexican folk art. Students enjoyed using intricate patterns and color schemes. We also had fun making surrealistic, fantastical masks using collage.

Kindergarten and 1st grade created hot dogs and cool cats to explore warm and cool colors, line rugs to use a variety of lines and watercolor resist, and feelings drops, to explore how colors express emotions.

My photo gallery will be updated with more examples of artwork every Friday.

Please visit the page listed as "Prodigies for Peace" (on the left margin) to learn about a local art contest. It is a great opportunity to create artwork to honor and celebrate the life and vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

    Sincerely,

    Mrs. Ripley
