The first Monroe Elementary School opened in 1969. It was named after James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States. The unique 1969 hexagonal design with seven individual units is completely unrecognizable today. The school’s total transformation was generously funded by voters in 2006 and completed in 2012. The new two-story building was one of the nation’s first elementary schools to be equipped with energy-efficient LED lighting, saving public funds over time.
