What Is Intake?
Intake is a multi-day course that students who wish to attend Sequoia must successfully complete. Upon completion, a student earns .25 elective credit and qualifies to register for classes at Sequoia. Intake 1 runs for 8 school days from 8:30-11:30 and the remaining intakes run for 12 school days from 2:30-4:30 each of those days for a total of 24 hours of instructional time. In addition to the class time, students must complete 10 homework assignments which are all due prior to end of intake.
Why Does Sequoia Do Intake?
In order to be successful as a student at Sequoia students must be able to meet assignment deadlines, work independently and attend regularly. Intake is designed to give students the opportunity to demonstrate that they are ready to do these things. In addition, our firm rules about arriving to intake on time and attending all days allow students to prove that they are serious about school at this time. If students are motivated to perform academically and responsible about attendance they are likely to do well at Sequoia.
What Do We Do During Intake?
On each of the days there are different activities including: writing an autobiography, learning to take effective notes, assessing learning style, learning time management strategies, understanding graduation requirements, doing career and college surveys, and many more. Students are required to participate in all activities and demonstrate positive behaviors during the class session.
A Successful Intake Student:
What Happens if a Student is Unable to Successfully Complete Intake?
- Completes all homework assignments and assessments (math, reading, writing)
- Keeps an organized binder
- Listens to and follows directions
- Works independently
- Treats each other and staff with respect
- Keeps cell phone turned off and put away
- Follows all reasonable staff requests
- Shows up on time every day
- Communicates with staff if there are any problems interfering with successful completion of intake
At Sequoia we understand that students may not be ready at a given moment in time to be successful at Sequoia. We also understand that circumstances change and a student may then be ready at a later date. That is why we "invite back" if a student is unsuccessful during an attempt at intake. We will be here when they are ready, so we invite them to come back and try again. With 8 intakes per year, students have many opportunities to show they are ready for school. Students who are invited back should re-enroll at their home high school in order to be in compliance with school attendance laws. What are Intake Dates for 2019-2020?
