After reading the article, someone might infer that bringing an "alien" or new species to a new land can cause damage or harm to the existing ecosystem. Your job is to provide evidence to support this opinion. Choose one invasive species from "Aliens from Earth" and provide details to support the idea that invasive species can be harmful to existing ecosystems. Make sure to use RACE to respond!

In our class meeting on Friday, we went over the new schedule that we will be following starting Monday.

The reason this schedule was created by the District is because now that the schools will be closed for the rest of the year and we still have 10 weeks of school left, we wanted to make sure that all students were still getting a quality education while maintaining a daily schedule of learning. We want them to be prepared for the 5th grade!  The schedule starts today!

School Schedule Starting April 20, 2020

    schedule

9:00-11:30  MathELA, Science lessons will continue as outlined on our web site and Google classroom.  In addition, we will be meeting as a class from 10-10:45 on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday to present and discuss our lessons, ask questions and conduct our class business.  This is part of the daily student schedule.  All students are expected to attend all meetings.  They should have their schoolwork and computers with them during these sessions.

Learning Objective: Identifying the structure of a text (how it is put together) can often help us understand what it is mostly about. For example, steps in a process are usually numbered from beginning to end. This tells the reader to follow directions in that order. Along with text features (table of contents, bold words, headings etc.) text structure helps us quickly navigate a text for specific information.

What students will do: Students will learn about “problem and solution” text structure. They will read the text “Save the Armadillo” and identify the main problem and some solutions.

    •  Log-in to Seesaw 4/20 ELA Task

    • Learning Objective:  Angles are geometric shapes that are formed wherever two rays share a common endpoint. They can be understood as the rotation of one ray away from the other, much like the hands on an analog clock.

What students do:  Look around your environment and find items that meet the criteria:  Right angles = 90 degrees, acute angles are less than 90 degrees and obtuse angles are more than 90 degrees.  Your evidence does not have to be the exact angle in the picture but it does have to meet the criteria.  Remember, the corner of a piece of paper is 90 degrees

    Math

Learning Objective:  Students apply concepts of area and perimeter to solve problems in real-world and mathematical measurement contexts.

Concept:  Area is the measure of space within a figure. It is expressed in square units. Perimeter is the measure around the edge of a shape. It is expressed in linear units.

What students will do: Students will read the advertisement, “Don’t be Terrorized by Termites”.

They will identify the author’s purpose for writing it and whether they think it was effective or not.

    https://zoom.us/j/97858142271?pwd=eUQwSHVFdFpTa0Jmb0VwSGcxbTRIdz09

    Math

Lesson Objective: For a given rectangle, if the length and width are doubled, then the perimeter is also doubled, but the area is quadrupled. If the dimensions are tripled, the perimeter is tripled but the area grows by a factor of 9 (that is, 3 • 3). This occurs because the perimeter is a linear measurement, while area is a square measure.

What students will do: Students consider what happens to the area and perimeter of rectangles when the dimensions (length and width) are doubled and tripled. They explore other multiplicative increases, working toward a generalizable rule.

What students will do: Students will compare the science fiction text, “The Fungus that Ate my School” and the non-fiction science experiment, “Mold Terrarium”. They will think about reasons for writing each text and reasons why someone would want to read them.

    • Resources:

“Mold Terrarium” by The Science Explorer pages 305 - 311 in your online REACH student textbook. Available online through Canvas in MyNGConnect.

     Hi Everybody!!

I created a new page on our website called  ”How do I...?”  This page gives directions and videos on how to get to many of the computer programs we will be using.  Check it out!!!

Also, I got a suggestion from one of the parents that it would be easier to get all the lessons and activities in one location.  So, starting tomorrow, I will put them on both the web site and Google Classroom. However, the ELA pieces need to be completed in Google classroom.

I will be giving directions about how to use zoom this afternoon so we can have a class meeting on the computer some time on Friday.  Look for an email with directions.

    • Math:  Let’s take a break and do something fun!!

I don’t know if any of you did the Tang puzzles from last week.  Please choose at least 2 from one or both of the grade levels (there are no 4th grade ones).  Answer keys are included.  You can always do more!!
