Dear students & families,
When I was in high school, I started learning Spanish and I was intrigued by learning a new language because it allowed me to communicate with different people. To be honest, I struggled when learning Spanish and I was embarrassed to speak because I was afraid of making a mistake. However, I didn't give up and I slowly started understanding more about the language. After college, I lived in Queretaro, Mexico for almost five years working as an English teacher. It was during that experience that I was forced to use the language I had to communicate, and even though I still made mistakes, people understood me and I was able to communicate with people who didn't speak my native language.
I received my Bachelor's Degree from Western Washington University, where I studied Spanish and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. After living abroad for several years, I then returned to the United States and received a Master's in Teaching from the University of Washington.
Have you ever heard someone say that they took years of Spanish in high school but that they don't remember anything? That is bound to happen if you take the classes and then forget about Spanish once you graduate. My goal is that you will become a life-long language learner and seek opportunities to continue learning outside the classroom. Here are a few ways you can do that:
1. Practicing Spanish on an app, like Duolingo
2. Having conversations within your community (Spanish-speaking friends, Mexican Restaurant, local Spanish-speaking grocery store, etc.)
3. Traveling
