Second Grade Science
Course Description:
During this year-long sequence of 2nd grade science units, students will engage in applying the NGSS Science and Engineering Practices and Crosscutting Concepts to the following life science, earth science, physical science and engineering design core ideas.
Life Cycles of Butterflies - Big Idea: All organisms have a life cycle. Each cycle stage has special characteristics and needs. The caterpillar is the larval stage of the butterfly’s life cycle. The chrysalis is the pupal stage of the butterfly’s life cycle. The adult butterfly has unique physical characteristics and needs. All living things have life cycles.
EIE: Best of Bugs - Designing Hand Pollinators - Big Idea: Insects are essential parts of the natural system of pollination. A human-made pollinator design can help to solve a problem within the natural world. Pollination is a natural system with parts that serve different functions. Agricultural engineers use their scientific knowledge to solve problems. Insects have many roles in the natural world, including pollinators, predators and herbivores. Materials have properties that make them good choices for certain solutions. A human-made design can help to solve a problem within the natural world. A tool designed to solve one specific problem may not be successful in solving another similar problem.
Air and Weather - Big Idea:
There are many ways we experience the air around us. Weather is caused by changes in the air. Air is matter that occupies space. Weather can be observed, measured and described. Wind is moving air and we can measure its speed and direction. Weather conditions change over time. Each season has a typical weather pattern.
