	How Special Education WorksSpecial education is governed by numerous processes and procedures designed to provide your student with an appropriate educational program. You do not need to become an expert in all areas of special education to be a good educational advocate for your student. Having a firm understanding of the basic special education processes and procedures, however, will help you navigate each step along the way. The following is an overview of 10 important steps in the special education processes that mark the progression of every student’s special education program. This list is not comprehensive; it serves as a guide to helping you understand where you might be in the process and what procedures may be applicable.

	Washington State Early Learning Guidelines Birth - 3rd GradeThis breaks down by age group the learning and development standards that we would expect. It is also divided into: about me/my family/culture, building relationships, touching/seeing/hearing/moving around, growing up healthy, communicating and learning about my world. What a great resource for teachers, therapists and parents!

	Current Nonpublic AgenciesPublic schools are required to provide a free appropriate public education (FAPE) to students with disabilities ages 3-21 who are eligible for special education. If a student's special education needs cannot be met by their resident district, the district may contract with an approved NonPublic Agency (NPA). The NPA provides the student's special education and related services that are determined through the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process.
