How Special Education Works
Special education is governed by numerous processes and procedures designed to provide your student with an appropriate educational program. You do not need to become an expert in all areas of special education to be a good educational advocate for your student. Having a firm understanding of the basic special education processes and procedures, however, will help you navigate each step along the way.

Current Nonpublic Agencies
Public schools are required to provide a free appropriate public education (FAPE) to students with disabilities ages 3-21 who are eligible for special education. If a student's special education needs cannot be met by their resident district, the district may contract with an approved NonPublic Agency (NPA). The NPA provides the student's special education and related services that are determined through the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process.

Prosser Health Outpatient Clinic
Locally, a student like this one could get speech therapy services within the school as well as outside. There is a great outpatient clinic that is associated with the Prosser Memorial Hospital that provides speech therapy services. Many parents take advantage of this during the summer when their child is not receiving services at school. There is a waitlist but once a child is through that the progress that can be made is significant.

Articulation Station
For parents that like to be able to download apps onto their phones or ipads so that they can do them with their children at home, one of our very favorites is Articulation Station. This app is free with some in-app purchases if needed, but it can be personalized to each individual child and focuses on each sound one at a time.
