Hello students and families.
Last Unit of the Year: To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Because this novel will be referenced repeatedly throughout your academic future, and because it is an outstanding work of art, and because of it's powerful social relevance, we will be finishing up our year reading this poignant and moving book. I've had the honor of teaching this novel over the last five years, but this is the first time teaching it online.
As a very new student to the world of online teaching, lessons and assignments for the week may not always be posted by Monday at noon. I will do my best to get the week's lessons out early so you can adjust your learning schedule for the week, but please make sure you are checking the calendar on this website and the Google Classroom frequently for added material and assignment adjustments. If you have any doubts about assignments for the week, please don't hesitate to send me an email with your concerns and questions.
Sensitive Themes in the Novel:
This novel covers many sensitive topics. To take the best that this novel has to offer, students must exercise a high level of maturity when reading and discussing the potent theme and motifs layered within. Racism, rape, murder, drug abuse, harsh language, and bigotry in several forms take place in this story. At first, I was hesitant to teach this novel to 8th graders because of the level of maturity required, but year after year students have shown that they can handle the responsibility and achieve a great understanding of both theme and structure.
If during the reading, analysis, and discussion of this novel you feel strong discomfort or are feeling unsafe, please contact me immediately. If anyone in the class is misusing language from the book or is being insensitive about events and concepts, please contact me. Remember that our class is a place of support and respect.
Pandemic Prose: Although I strongly encourage you to continue writing a journal about your pandemic experiences, I am not going to include them as mandatory work anymore. The reading load and analysis work for To Kill a Mockingbird is going to be quite rigorous for many of you, so I am going to back off on the journal writing. If you would like to send me some of your continuing journal entries, I would be happy to read them (or you could share them with each other). In place of the journal writing, you may be asked on occasion to perform a quick write or more formal response to prompts directing your attention to some aspect of our reading and analysis.
