Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID)
The AVID mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
AVID is...
- A program found in more than 4,500 schools in 45 states and 15 countries.
- A class available to middle and high school students.
- A college preparatory system that:
- teaches students organization skills (both physical and mental).
- helps students develop writing, inquiry and reading strategies to be successful.
- builds collaboration skills.
- prepares students to access rigorous courses that will prepare them for success in 4-year colleges and universities.
Who is an AVID student?
AVID students generally are in the academic middle--in the range of 2.0 to 3.5--who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but are falling short of their potential. They may be the first in their families to attend college, and/or from low-income or minority families. Some AVID students may have special circumstances impacting their success and receive support from the AVID program to get back on track.

Who can I talk to about enrolling in the AVID program?
Students with a desire to be in the AVID elective class must first go through an application and interview process. This process typically occurs in the Spring semester, with placement in the AVID elective beginning the following school year. For more information, contact your counselor.
