    The resources we commonly use are Springboard, Scope, and Accelerated Reader (AR). 

    With the recent shut down of our district due to COVID-19, I will be updating my website weekly with new learning opportunities for students.

    Students are encouraged to complete late assignments and turn then in for grading. Two important assignments that were due before the shutdown include: 

                              A Long Walk to Water unit assessment-emailed to students who need to complete

                              A Long Walk to Water literary analysis-students can find materials and assignment submission through Google Classroom

    Monday, June 15th-

    This is it! We are down to the last week of school! For this week, I have posted the last journal entry and wanted to give students a chance to complete any previous work to improve their grade. Please check grades this week and let me know if I missed anything, as they will be unchangeable after the 16th. It has been a pleasure working with all of you this year and I wish you a relaxing summer. Let's hope this fall will get us back on track.     Monday, June 8th-

    The story for this week is a continuation of last week: The Bear Attacks that Changed America. I have added the journal entry for this week. Next week, I will add another journal entry and give students an opportunity to complete any of the previous work they missed. It is also a week to finalize our grades, which means all assignments need to be into me by June 16th for grading. This has been a tough time for all of us and I appreciate your patience and understanding during this transition. Please reach out to me if you need anything. Take care!

    We are down to the last three weeks of school! I can't believe it's already here. Assignments for this week and next have been posted on Google Classroom. The story for the next two weeks is: The Bear Attacks that Changed America. There were so many great reading and writing skills that aligned with this story, I extended it for two weeks. Students should focus on two skills for each week, their journal entry #3, and the multiple-choice quiz. I also included an optional essay contest given through Scholastic.     Tuesday, May 26th-

    I hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. This weeks Scope reading will be based on a folktale called Taming the Fear Monster with Close Reading as the main skill focus. Journal entry #2 was also added. Please let me know if you have any questions and/or concerns.

    Monday, May 18th-

    This week will be short consisting of four days for Memorial Day weekend. I have provided a short read on chips and the science behind their flavors. Included with this story is a vocabulary worksheet, a worksheet on how to build a claim (opinion), and a short quiz. This week I have also introduced a new weekly journal entry called "Diary of a Quarantined Kid". This is a simple journal entry for your child to share document their quarantine experience. Each week a new journal prompt will be provided.

    Monday, May 11th- 

    This weeks reading will be based on the Problem of Plastic from Scope magazine. You can find a link to the assignments in Google Classroom. The issue of using plastics and the impact on the environment has been a local concern this year, i.e. banning plastic bags in Snohomish county. This has also been a topic of interest in my doctoral classes this quarter based on the perspective of companies and their responsibility for the environmental impact of their products. This weeks story does not have any interactive worksheets available just a quiz. 

    Two reading articles in Zinc have also been assigned this week: A Massive Floating Boom is Supposed to Clean up the Pacific. Can it Work? and 99% of the plastic we throw in the Ocean has Mysteriously Disappeared.

    Monday, May 4th- 

    This week we are back to Scope with a great story on Hunting Monsters, mythical creatures we all hear about (Bigfoot). There are two texts included in this weeks article and we focus on vocabulary and synthesis. Synthesis is a higher level thinking skill and helps you combine ideas with your own to create a new theory. This type of thinking allows you to have a solid argument and a valid reason for your thinking. All of the information you need to complete this week's work has been posted on Google Classroom. 

    I also graded and sent back journal writing for last week. Those were super fun to read. I have not been able to access Zinc and plan to get those into the gradebook by Wednesday. I am not putting official grades into gradebook, just the participation of Yes or No. These 'grades' are more for district and state data collection. This helps see how many students are engaged from home and not as a way to punish or make anyone feel bad for not completing all of the work. Please work at your own pace and continue to do your best.

    I decided to change it up a bit this week and collaborated with Ms. Lien on journal writing. There will be two assignments this week: Journal writing prompt and Zinc article, How to Feed the World. 

    Please log in to Google Classroom for instructions on the journal writing prompt and log into Springboard to access the assigned Zinc article. 

    Don't forget to continue reading your independent reading book and complete AR tests.

    Monday, April 20th-New Learning Format

    The district has given better guidelines for how to conduct online learning. Therefore, I have assigned a new Scope article: The History of Teeth, and labeled the skills with Monday/Tuesday and Wednesday/Thursday to reflect this new guideline. The date will depend on the class period you have with me. 

    The Scope magazine article this week has been posted to Google Classroom, class code:decker123. 

    Please continue your Zinc Reading Sprints this week as well. 

    Scores for last weeks quiz on The History of the Penny have been graded and sent back. The scores should be out of 8 but the document keeps saying out of 0. I am working on how to fix this issue, not sure what is happening.

     Monday, April 13th-Welcome back from Spring Break!

    This weeks assignment has been posted to Google Classroom. No Zinc this week. 

    Read the debate on: Should We Get Rid of the Penny? 

    With so many countries getting rid of the penny, should the United States? 

    My focus this week will be to look at what makes an argumentative essay, not write one...yet....

    Practice the vocabulary, fill out the debate form and complete the quiz. 

    This will be a short week for work as I am doing a lot of planning this week.

    Read Vanished-The Disappearance of Amelia Earhart

    In Google Classroom I have listed the topics by day to complete. My hope is this will help you organize one worksheet per day with the quiz being on Friday. 

    Of course, you may work at your own pace (quicker or slower). 

    Please let me know if you are unable to find the video, this was not something I was able to share within the classroom. I hope it may be linked to the article or you may need to find it in Scope online. 

    Zinc-Springboard Sprint

    Complete a new article this week. Or begin the assessment if you have not already. 


    Keep up with that independent reading. Check out the library page, as there was news of possible online books.
