Course Introduction & Information
Welcome to 8th Grade English Language Arts! This academic year is a critical turning point for students to build on 7th grade progress. In addition to new concepts, 8th grade Hawks will begin to refine skills that are necessary for success in high school, college and beyond, which means rigorous work, higher expectations, and more independence. Ultimately, 8th grade students will stretch beyond their comfort zones and work through challenges in an effort to succeed in the future.
The foundation of our work will be based and built upon the English Language Arts Common Core State Standards. The College Board’s SpringBoard curriculum will be used to guide instruction while leading students to become critical thinkers and independent learners in order to gain the reading and writing abilities for a successful learner. The main domains in English Language Arts instruction are — Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening, and Media Literacy.
Students will:
- Build knowledge through text-based analysis and discussion of content-rich nonfiction and informational texts
- Practice reading, writing, and speaking grounded in evidence from text
- Have regular practice with complex text and its academic vocabulary
- Focus on argumentation rather than persuasion
