STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND ALL PERFORMANCES!!! Concerts/performances are an important part of this class. Students are expected to remain until the completion of each performance. After performances: Students are expected to help with break-down chores, such as putting instruments, equipment, and chairs away.
Excused absences from a performance must be of a serious nature (such as an illness or family emergency). Unexcused absences from a performance will result in a reduction of one letter grade.
Under the Calendar section is a concert schedule. Please put these dates in your planners and on a family calendar to avoid confusion or conflicts when the performance dates arrive. Please consider these dates as you plan for family vacations, orthodontics appointments, etc!
Concert Dress: Students are required to dress appropriately for concerts. Concert dress for concerts is Heatherwood band shirt (students will purchase these in October), black pants or skirt and black dress shoes. Please, no white socks!
Students who do not abide by this dress code will have grades penalized and may lose their opportunity to perform. Families who have financial difficulty with fulfilling these requirements are encouraged to contact Mr. Stangland or Band Boosters for assistance.
Students are to abide by the Heatherwood Middle School Code of Conduct at all times:
--Be Respectful
--Act Responsibly
--Be Part of the Solution
Whether at an assembly or an evening performance, students should be prepared to set an example of the highest artistic and professional conduct both on and off the stage. Students (and families) are to sit quietly while students are performing. Parents can really help out by sharing their expectations for appropriate behavior with their students as they and their kids attend these events. Students who exhibit inappropriate behavior while at performances (either while in the audience or while performing) will have points deducted from their final grade.
Students are to act in an appropriate and supportive manner while attending performances and festivals where groups from other schools are performing.
PRACTICE: Each student is to establish a routine of daily practice on his/her instrument. A minimum of 20 minutes a day is recommended in order to promote a pattern of consistent growth in building skills and musicianship.
A minimum of 100 minutes per week is required to meet practice expectations (i.e., five practice sessions of approximately 20 minutes). A large number of students practice many more minutes each week! Practice sheets will be handed out to students approximately every month, and are to be properly filled out by students and signed by parents (using the honor system) and turned in by the due date. Practice sheets which are not handed in on time will have points deducted.
CLASSROOM RULES AND EXPECTATIONS:
1. Be courteous and respectful at all times.
2. Always do your best!!!
3. Be on time. Students are to be in the classroom when the bell rings, and seated with instruments ready to play two minutes after the bell rings.
