The Everett Public Schools award winning PTSA (Parent, Teacher and Student Association) Council is an organization designed for parents, students and staff to advocate for quality education for each child. The Opportunity Council launched in Whatcom County in 1965 as a volunteer group and model project for President Lynden B. Johnson’s 1964 Economic Opportunity Act to help low income people. The private, non-profit human services organization serves Whatcom, Island, San Juan, Skagit and Snohomish counties, offering a broad scope of services including meeting immediate and crisis-oriented needs, longer-term programs promoting self-sufficiency, and early childhood education and child development support services. Washington Alliance for Better Schools (WABS) was established in 1995 by several Puget Sound school districts in order to help students graduate career and college ready; WABS is designed to facilitate school districts working together more closely. Its mission is to leverage resources, talent and intellectual capital to help over a quarter million students graduate college and career ready. Signature programs include STEM teacher externships, STEM fellowships, family STEM nights, and Natural Leaders, all of which are described on the WABS website.
