Pre-Employment Substitute Frequently Asked Questions
-
What are the education and experience requirements for the job?
Paraeducators must have one of the following: hold either an associates degree or higher, have passed the ParaPro Test, or completed 72 quarter credits/48 semester credits from an accredited university. A valid teaching certificate is required for all teaching jobs (Emergency Substitute Teaching (EST) applicants will work with the district in the EST process after being hired) EPS requires a bachelor’s degree for the Emergency Teaching Certificate
I am a certified teacher from another state. How can I obtain a Washington certificate?
You will need your transcripts verifying your degree(s) and teacher preparation program. You will also need your university or state-approved agency to complete the program verification form (4020E or 4020E-1, attached). If you have three years or more of certified, out-of-state teaching experience, please also send a copy of your out-of-state certificate(s) and provide verification of experience (form 4020F-1, attached). With the appropriate degree, program completion and/or certified, out-of-state experience, you can apply and be issued a one-year temporary permit pending verification of successful completion of the required testing.
You can access the electronic application by logging onto the Education Data System (EDS). You will need to set up a username and password. Begin at E-Certification instructions login page and choose "Create an Account." Once logged into EDS, you'll want to go to the My Applications tab and choose E-Certification from the available list. Sometimes the E-Certification option won't appear for 10-15 minutes, or up to a few hours, so you may need to log out and try again later that day.

Are there a minimum number of days I need to work to remain active on the substitute list?
Substitutes are expected to work a minimum of two assignments per month.
-
Can I just work at one school / grade level, or do I have to work at them all?
Substitutes have the flexibility to choose their assignments from the available openings. If they want to work only at the school closest to them or only in Middle Schools etc, that is allowed, so long as they meet the minimum working requirements.
-
What would my hours be?
Substitute hours are dictated by the available vacancies and the jobs substitutes accept. Classroom specific roles (Teacher, Para, School Office Staff, etc.) have work hours between 7:00am-4:00pm (varies by school). Transportation, Food and Nutrition, Maintenance and Custodial have varied hours which could include early morning and late evening times. Substitutes can work just a few hours a month or could accept several jobs and end up working full time hours. Food & Nutrition substitutes typically work less than 15 hours per week.
-
Do substitutes get Health Benefits and Sick Leave?
Substitutes earn sick leave as they work, one hour for every 40 hours worked. If a substitute works more than 630 hours in a school year (Sept-Jun) then they become eligible for Medical & Dental Benefits.
-
How quickly could I transition from a substitute employee to an employee?
Substitutes are frequently hired on for employment within the district. Substitutes would apply for the open position they are interested in and would go through the standard application process. This process can take several weeks to complete.
-
What training do I get/opportunities for growth?
Every substitute is required to attend New Substitute Orientation. Custodial and Food & Nutrition substitutes will have an additional role specific orientation as well.
Substitutes who are interested in additional training and professional growth opportunities can review the district offerings available.
