    May 22, 2020 | Family & student information

    A message from Dr. Saltzman:

    Dear Everett Public Schools families:
     
    I hope you and your family are staying safe and healthy.
     
    We have several important updates for you below. All this information and more can also be found on our website, everettsd.org.
     
    Chromebooks
    Traditionally we collect all district-provided student devices and hot spots before the last day of school, but we understand many families would like to keep these to help with continued learning through the summer. This year you will have the option to keep them beyond the end of the school year, except for seniors and anyone moving out of district.
     
    Week of June 8-12: 
    ·      Senior students will return their student devices and hot spot to their schools. If you would like to keep the district-provided device through the date commencement ceremonies will be premiered on YouTube, please let your school know and arrangements can be made for a later drop-off.
     
    Week of June 15-19:
    ·      Students in grades K-11 who would prefer to return their student device and hot spot can return their technology to their school site during school scheduled material pick up and drop off times. This includes families who plan not to return to Everett Public Schools.
    ·      Your school will communicate exact days and times with you.
    ·      You may keep the district-provided Chromebook through August 3.
     
    There will be a Chromebook collection in August to allow the district to prepare them for the 2020-21 school year. They will be available before the beginning of school.
     
    August 3:  Chromebook Collection Day at your school sites
    ·      Elementary:  all students return their device to their school
    ·      Middle:  all North and Gateway students return their device to their school;
    8th graders at Heatherwood, Eisenhower, Evergreen return their devices to their schools.
     
     
    Grading at all levels
    The district’s goals for grading during school building closures are to ensure students receive feedback and support on their engagement and progress towards core learning standards, and to minimize the negative impact of the school building closure on students’ academic records. A guide for high school and middle school credit-bearing course grades was sent to families on April 27. We now have grading standards for K-8 students not taking credit-bearing high school level coursework.
     
    Students in grades K–8 will continue to be challenged to demonstrate effort and success in core learning standards as identified by their teachers. We will continue to emphasize the importance of teacher feedback to students on work and progress to standards.  No final student grades will be lowered from their March 17 status. 
     
    Middle school non-credit bearing courses
     
    Middle school students will be graded on an A-C scale
     
    ·      A or 4.0 on the 4.0 grading scale: This is for students who had an A on March 17, or who had a lower grade and has shown both progress to core learning standards and has shown engagement during distance learning.
     
    ·      B or 3.0 on the 4.0 grading scale: This is for students who had a B on March 17, or who had a lower grade and has shown either progress to core learning standards or has shown engagement during distance learning.
     
    ·      C or 2.0 on the 4.0 grading scale: This is for students who had a C on March 17 and is also the foundational target for teachers to work with students who had lower than a C, to engage them in learning.  After consistent attempts to engage students who had a D or F on March 17, these grades will ultimately be converted to a C in the final report card. 
     
    Elementary school students – evaluation of learning
     
    Teachers will provide a written final evaluation of student learning to priority standards and overall student engagement. The report will include:
     
    A copy of the first-semester progress report.
     
    A separate second-semester progress report that includes:
    list of priority standards taught during closure, specific to each grade level
    A narrative written by the teacher that explains each student’s engagement and progress toward priority standards as well as areas of growth for each student.
     
    All grades and final evaluations will be sent home after June 19, the last day of school.
     
    Graduation
    Commencement looks very different this year due to social distancing mandates. A letter was sent to all seniors and their families May 20 with details about how the decision was made and what to expect.
     
    Ad Hoc Curriculum Committee
    Everett Public Schools is in the process of establishing an ad hoc committee for the middle school Get Real instructional materials. The ad hoc committee will:
               
    1.    review the middle school Get Real materials to assure alignment to the new legislation SB 5395,
     
    2.    confirm evaluation as aligned to 2311P to assess standards alignment, research-based instructional strategies, bias content, and accessibility by special populations, and
     
    3.    inform content that will be used to develop a consistent set of alternative lessons for students whose families opt out of Get Real participation.
     
    This process will be facilitated online with an expected three meetings over the course of the summer.
     
    The ad hoc committee will include four (4) parents. If you are a parent of a current Everett Public Schools student, and have interest in participating on this committee, please complete this survey no later than Wednesday, June 3 at 4 p.m. Selected committee members will be notified by the end of the day, Monday, June 8.

    Dear Everett Public Schools families:
     
    I hope you are well and have been enjoying this great weather in a safe manner. Spring in the Northwest is beautiful!
     
    As we are nearing the last month of school, we have many updates, with several to share below. All this information and more can also be found on our website, everettsd.org.
     
    New calendar

    A new district calendar was approved by the Board last week to include adding one make-up day due to COVID-19 and a few other adjustments. The following changes were made:

    - May 22 is a non-workday for teachers and therefore no school
    - June 5 is not an early release day, but will follow the current modified structure
    - Learning Improvement Fridays (LIF) are suspended through June 19 to follow the current modified structure
    - June 19 is the new last day of school. June 12 is the last day for seniors.
     
    Summer school
    Summer learning opportunities are available for elementary, middle and high school students through remote learning. Information about programs and how to register is available at everettsd.org/summerschool. Programs start June 29.
     
    Essential item pick-up
    We understand your student may still have personal items at their school which are essential to continue their learning from home, such as calculators, books or medications. Schools will be conducting personal item pick-up days in late-May for families to collect your student’s essential items, which will be pre-bagged and labeled by staff. You will receive more specific information on pick-up times from your school next week, but the dates are: elementary schools, May 26 and 27; middle and high schools, May 28 and 29.
     
    There will be a second parent pick-up event at our schools on select dates between June 12-19 for families to collect any remaining student items and to return Chromebooks, library books, textbooks, musical instruments, etc. More information about the June pick-up events will be shared with parents in the coming weeks.
     
    Grade reporting
    Formal grade reporting occurs twice annually by semesters. Students and families received progress reports in early February and will receive final grade reports after the last day of school, which is June 19.

    May 1, 2020 | Attendance 

    A message from Dr. Saltzman: 

    Good afternoon Everett Public School Families 

    I hope you are well and continuing to stay home and stay healthy. We are making a difference! 

    Last week we shared the grading structure for this school year’s second semester. Part of grading depends on the measurement of student learning engagement, which teachers are now going to be tracking in Gradebook. We want to explain how the district will be collecting student “attendance,” and how you can check Gradebook for these measures. The purpose of monitoring student engagement is to be able to better support students and families. 

    We will not be asking for “daily attendance” at this point but rather a weekly look back at student engagement. Student learning engagement is defined as participation in group lessons, assignment completion, or conferencing over the course of the prior week. (e.g., exchanging academic work, connecting with teachers, accessing content, logging on to lessons, independent work). 

    Teachers will document student learning engagement in Gradebook in:

    • Elementary homeroom classes
    • All secondary classes where attendance is typically taken

    Teachers will enter student engagement data once a week on Wednesdays, for the previous five school days starting the Wednesday before.

    There are 3 codes that can be used to monitor student learning engagement:           

    Y- Yes, the student engaged in learning opportunities during the week
    N- No, the student did not engage in learning opportunities during the week
    NS- Not scheduled to see specific student in the last week

    The NS -“not scheduled” option has been added to the scale for specialists with gradebooks who may not see students on daily or even weekly basis.

    All parents can log in to the gradebook to view these assignments. Most middle and high school families already regularly log in to view course grades and so know how to navigate from class to class. Elementary families have only had access this past year so this may be a new process. The parent log in is the same for gradebook, Home Access Center, website, Hoonuit, and Canvas.

    Closure Attendance in Gradebook

    Middle and High School students’ families will see the closure assignments listed in the gradebook Grades view alongside other assignments posted for second semester.

    Elementary School families will see the closure assignments within a student’s homeroom course. Access to gradebook for elementary families was introduced just this past fall. Directions are posted here to find the Closure Assignment but full information about the elementary gradebook view for families is posted on our website.

    April 27, 2020 | Grading standards

    A message from Dr. Saltzman: 

    Dear Everett Public School families: 

    We hope this letter finds your family healthy and well. When school districts across Washington closed for the remainder of the school year, our plans prioritized students’ access to meals, technology, and resources to consistently engage in distance learning. One unresolved issue was how to assign grades during this time. The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) came out with statewide grading standards on April 21. Working within their parameters, Everett Public Schools will be grading this semester as outlined below.

    Grading K-8

    Students in grades K–8 will be challenged by their teachers to demonstrate effort and success in learning standards. Students will move on to the next grade unless the parent/guardian has already been working through the retention process with their teacher/principal prior to the date of school building closure. The process to assign final semester grades for K-8 is yet to be determined, but no student grades will be lower than their March 17 status.

    Grades 9–12 and middle school students taking credit-bearing high school level work 

    Students will be graded on the A, B, C or Incomplete criteria. We are awaiting word from OSPI whether Sequoia High School can continue to use alternative grading scales as they have done for many years.

    • Every student will get an opportunity to improve their grade with their March 17 status as a baseline.

     

    • No grade will go down from the March 17 baseline. No student will receive a “pass,” “fail” or “no credit” grade for any course.

     

    • Any student can improve their grade by showing frequent or consistent engagement, or by showing progress. Engagement is defined as participation (for example: exchanging academic work and connecting with teachers; logging on to lessons, evidence of independent work). Progress is defined as work that demonstrates growth towards meeting essential learning standards.

     

    • A or 4.0 on the 4.0 grading scale: This is for students who had an A on March 17, or who had a lower grade and have shown both progress to learning standards and have shown engagement during distance learning.

     

    • B or 3.0 on the 4.0 grading scale: This is for students who had a B on March 17, or who had a lower grade and have shown either progress to learning standards or have shown engagement during distance learning.

     

    • C or 2.0 on the 4.0 grading scale: This is for students who had a C on March 17 and is also the foundational target for teachers to work with students who had lower than a C, to engage them in learning.

     

    • I (Incomplete): This is the rare option for circumstances that might warrant it. Students assigned an “incomplete” for a course will be given opportunities to reengage in the learning standards according to a district process to be developed soon. Some options could include:
      • Summer school,
      • Courses in the following term or year,
      • Independent study,
      • Competency-based courses,
      • Online courses, or
      • Backfilling the incomplete grade with the letter grade obtained in the next course taken in that subject area.

     

    • Every class taken during the closure period will be given a statewide designator on the high school transcript to denote the unique environment in which the course was taken.

    Students receiving Special Education services

    With access to accommodations and modifications, students can be graded using the grading criteria above. If a student was graded Pass / Fail before closure they can receive a “pass” or “satisfactory” grading option or the grading criteria above per OSPI. Grading should be determined on an individual-student basis in partnership with the student and parent/guardian.

    College in the High School

    High school students who are taking a College in the High School course will receive specific information from their teachers. Please note these courses may be subject to grading standards and expectations from the respective higher education institutions.

    Sno-Isle and CTE Dual Credit

    We are still seeking clarity for grading in Sno-Isle and CTE Dual Credit courses. We will provide further information as soon as possible.

    April 15, 2020 | New learning supports starting April 20

    Message from Dr. Saltzman:

    Good afternoon Everett Public School Families,

    I hope you and your loved ones are “staying home and staying healthy” and enjoying the great spring sunshine we have been seeing. 

    With distance learning being extended through the end of the school year, the district is putting into place new learning supports starting Monday, April 20. The goal is to provide a more predictable school day experience as your child(ren) continue to adjust to learning in a remote environment. Attached are schedules based on your child’s grade level. There are dedicated times for students to participate in learning, and there are many ways for students to be engaged during these times. These are recommended schedules; we want you to be able to determine the schedule that works best for your family. 

    Again, these structures start Monday, April 20. Please call or email your child’s teacher or principal directly if you have any questions, concerns or need specific support.

    We know this is a hard time for many. We strive to provide what you and your students need to make learning at home successful. Would you please take a few minutes to answer a short parent/guardian survey letting us know how we are doing and how we could do better?

    The survey is open now through midnight on Sunday, April 19. Your feedback is most welcome and appreciated.

    We are excited to welcome our students back to learning tomorrow. Although it looks and feels different, I want you to know how hard our educators are working to find the right ways to engage with your child(ren). We know there are many unanswered questions right now. We will be sharing more this week as details get finalized and thank you for your patience in the process. 

    As a way to create excitement for jumping back into learning, beginning tomorrow is a district wide Spirit Week and we hope you can get your child involved and perhaps share pictures with us at communications@everettsd.org.

    As you have likely heard, today Governor Inslee announced the closure of all school buildings in our state through the end of this school year. It is hard for all of us, because we miss having our students in school, but we know this is the right decision for the health of our community. Although we will not be back in the classroom this year, we are confident we will be able to continue learning and student engagement through June. Please continue to enjoy your spring break. When we are back and reengaged next week, we will be able to share more details about what the rest of the year will look like. Please continue to stay home and stay safe.

    Message from Dr. Saltzman:

    Tomorrow is the start of Spring Break 2020. It is probably going to look a little different than what you imagined your Spring Break would look like this year. But I hope you are still able to make it something memorable with your family and take time to take care of yourselves. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected everyone in different ways, but the anxiety and uncertainty we all feel can be weighty. I encourage you to take this time to do what you and your family need to unwind, regroup and recharge.

    Our educators will also be taking the week off to be with their families and to rest. There will not be student engagement and learning over Spring Break. We will, however, continue to serve emergency meals next week.

    Last night Governor Inslee extended the “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” mandate through May 4. To comply, we are now keeping schools closed until that time. We will continue to keep students engaged in learning remotely, as well as providing emergency meals.

    We will keep you updated with any major news related to school and COVID-19 over the break, and plan on reengaging with all of you on Monday, April 13. In the meantime, take care of yourself and your loved ones. These are difficult times for our community and for our nation, but we will get through this together.

    AP Exams Information:

    The AP College Board has made adjustments to the regular AP testing process and schedule in order to adhere to the “Stay home stay healthy” mandate and while schools are closed. The AP exams will be taken at home with a different format. Visit our AP Exams page for more information.


     

    April 1, 2020 | 4:30 p.m.

    Student learning packets for spring break:  There is now a pre-K through 5th grade spring break optional “packet” comprised of math, English Language Arts and science activities available. The math and science activities are in both English and Spanish.  The packet has been posted to the district website under “pre-K to 5th grade packets” tile on student engagement web page. There will be a reduced number of packets intended for students with limited internet access, which will be made available at meal distribution sites on Friday. Packets are not being mailed.

    For seniors: If you are a parent of a senior, please check your email for a separate communication on how the district is supporting our seniors to ensure graduation requirements are met during the school closure period, or visit Class of 2020 Supports.

    Wi-Fi hotspots: We are experiencing a community-wide shortage of internet hot-spots.  As a result, during our deployment tomorrow of Chromebooks and hot-spots, we may not be able to accommodate all requests. Another option is two months of free internet through Comcast. All new customers will receive a free self-install kit that includes a cable modem and Wi-Fi router. It is a no term contract.
