In the excavation project, the contractors found a layer of organic soft material below the field surface not suitable for the turf application. This material was removed from the site. At this time they have finished the installation of the base layer, which is the rock layer you see in this photo. Next they will install the elastic layer pad. Once that layer is complete, they will begin installation the synthetic turf.

The board awarded the bid on June 6, 2017. The City of Everett agreed to issue the demolition and grading permit while the design team worked with the city to determine the design and engineering requirements for code related drainage issues. The finished design has been submitted to the city for permitting. The notice to proceed was issued on July 24. The contractor has removed the sod and topsoil from the site. In the course of excavation, the contractor encountered a 1’ to 2’ layer of soil that contains organic material. The contractor has been given direction to remove this unsuitable soil and to replace the soil with material stockpiled on site. This week the contractor is directionally boring under the existing track and installing an 8” storm drain line.

The Cascade High School football field turf replacement has truly been a challenge, but there is some activity happening!
There were permitting delays because of the City of Everett’s interpretation of the Department of Ecology’s new water quality treatment requirements and more recently, our contractor inadvertently made an error on their bond documents that must be corrected before they can proceed with the project.
Cascade Football Coach Shane Keck, administration and facilities staff are working together to come up with the best solution for fall practices. Currently the plan involves the football team primarily practicing on the baseball outfield with temporary goal posts (we used this plan a few years ago when we installed the track). Ultimately, while the delay is unfortunate, the installation of turf will be a major boon for Cascade High for years to come.
