A local school board is a uniquely American institution. Local governance has made public schools flexible and responsive to local communities' needs.
The school board is responsible and accountable for vision, structure, advocacy, and governance. The board’s functions are:- Assessing, adopting and evaluating policy that adheres to state and national law and reflects district values
- Developing, planning, monitoring and assessing the district’s Strategic Plan, goals and objectives
- Representing and acting as a liaison between the community and the district
- Hiring and establishing goals for the evaluation of the superintendent
- Approving, monitoring and stewarding district assets in alignment with community priorities
- Assuring systematic review and evaluation of the district curriculum and programs
- Advocating on behalf of the district for appropriate state and national educational laws
Student safety and each student's continuous learning improvement are top priorities. Each student's needs and interests are the board's primary responsibilities.
Individual Board Members
Individual board member's authority is limited to actions taken by the board as a whole when the board is legally in session. Board members do not assume the responsibilities of administrators or other employees.
